What We Want

We describe ourselves as a journal of brilliant things--and that's exactly what we want from our writers and artists. Work that is beautiful, shocking, intense and memorable. Our tastes are eclectic: we tend to favour dark pieces over humorous ones. That said we're not completely averse to more innocent creations, so long as they have that special quality that means we're still thinking about them days after we finish reading.

Genre work is welcome, but should not be clichéd or genre-typical. Cross-genre work is welcome and experimentation is encouraged. We like our poetry modern and our literature weird, but not nonsensical. We are not appreciative of sentimentality.

We accept work of any form. This includes short stories, poems, concrete poems, articles, letters, scripts, paintings, digital artwork and comics. What matters is not that your work conforms to a particular form or archetype; but that it does something unique and wonderful. There is no word limit for Neon magazine.

To get a feel for the kind of work we feature, it is strongly suggested that you take the time to read an issue. Neon has a very specific feel and style; 80% of rejections are because the piece was not suited to Neon's aesthetic. Instant downloads are available from the shop for just £2--click here to take a look. Is that the kind of work you like? Is that the kind of work that you produce? If so, then go ahead and submit.

How To Submit

If sending shorter works, such as poems, please send a selection. If sending longer works, just one or two will be fine. Please format single spaced, without indents, paragraphs seperated by a blank line, line breaks indicated by a ###. All submissions are read by Krishan Coupland, who is male, and feels weird when addressed by anything other than his first name.

You can send your work in the body of an email to:

fourvolts (at) hotmail (dot) co (dot) uk

In the subject line write: "Short story submission", "Poetry submission", etc as appropriate.

Please also include a short biographical note (up to 100 words) in the body of the Email.

You should recieve a reply within about one month. If you haven't heard from us after six weeks, then send us an Email, as we may have overlooked your work.
